Monday’s Shorts: Unknown

21 11 2011

Today’s word is unknown.  The word means not within the range of one’s knowledge, experience, or understanding.  Un- comes from the Proto-Germanic un which means not, and known comes from Old English cnawan which comes from the Greek gno.  I believe experience is important when it comes to discovering the unknown, or at least, that which seems unknowable.

The unknown can be scary, but God want us to trust Him with it.  I was reading Dueteronomy 29 when I realized this truth.  Moses says in verse 29, “The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law.”  The secret, or unknown, things are God’s therefore we don’t need to worry about them.  Conversely, what God has revealed to us, we must obey those things.  I take this to mean that whatever God has given us to obey that is what we must do.  A pastor once told my wife that we should obey God to the end of what he has told us, and we when reach that point, He will give us the next step.  In that way, the unknown becomes ours through the experience of obedience.

What has God given you to obey? Are you scared because of the unknowns? Will you trust Him with the results and stop delaying obedience?
